Coopers Beach in Southampton, New York is blessed with magnificent white sand that slopes to the shoreline to collide with the waves, very convenient parking and amenities and is so clean you can't even find a gum wrapper in sight!
All these make Cooper Beach America's best based on an annual survey released Friday to coincide with the start of the summer vacation season.
Others that made it to the top ten this year include two beaches in Florida, namely Siesta Beach in Sarasota at No. 2 and Cape Florida State Park in Key Biscayne at No. 10.
Cape Florida has no wave activity that can lead to tar balls washing up, while Siesta Beach seems to be spared from the wrath of the current oil spill based on wave activity in the area.
Another New York beach, Main Beach in East Hampton, Long Island, made it to No. 5 this year. Most people tend to go south when they think beaches, they fail to consider some the country's best kept secrets just a bit up north.
Also included in the top 10 are Coronado Beach, Calif. (3), Cape Hatteras, N.C. (4), Kahanamoku Beach in Waikiki, Honolulu (No. 6), Coast Guard Beach in Cape Cod, Mass. (7), Beachwalker Park in Kiawah Island, S.C. (8), and Hamoa Beach in Maui, Hawaii (9).
