World Travel

At one time it was only the very rich or the young who embarked on world travel. It was very popular in the 60s for college aged adults – often called hippies due to their lifestyle and appearance – to buy camping vans and travel around the world. They would usually only have enough money for short periods of time and would work as they traveled to pay for the next leg.

Most would start their journey in Europe and move from country to country grape and fruit picking as they went along. By the time they were ready to go across to Africa via Gibraltar the money is their pocket was sufficient to last many months in cheap third world countries.

The rich did their world travel differently. At one time the famed Orient Express, a luxury train, traveled from Europe to Asia picking up and dropping off passengers along the way. Another luxury way to travel around the world was by cruise ship.

Travelers of the past didn't have the same luggage restrictions that are mandated now and so many travelled with huge suitcases, and lots of them. Helping passengers transport their cases from train and ship to their hotels was a job for hundreds of thousands of people around the world.
